Frequently asked questions

Plain answers to the questions on your mind.

These are the questions our intake coordinator hears most often. If yours is not here, send us a confidential note and we will respond the same business day.

Costs and fees

3 questions

An uncontested divorce with no minor children often resolves for a flat fee of $1,800 to $3,500. A simple contested divorce with one or two disputed issues typically runs $8,000 to $18,000. High-asset and high-conflict matters can range from $25,000 to $100,000 or more depending on how litigated they become. We will give you a realistic budget range after your consultation and update it as the case develops. We do not bill you for surprises we could have anticipated.

Divorce

2 questions

Tennessee requires a 60-day waiting period for divorces without minor children and a 90-day waiting period when minor children are involved. Uncontested matters can finalize as soon as the waiting period expires. Contested matters in Davidson County typically take 12 to 18 months from filing to final order, though complex cases take longer.

Custody

3 questions

Most contested custody matters in Davidson and Williamson counties resolve within 9 to 14 months. We can usually obtain a temporary parenting order within 60 to 90 days of filing. If the case proceeds to a full custody trial, the hearing itself may take one to four days of court time, scheduled months in advance.

Trial and process

4 questions

Fewer than one in ten of our family-law matters reach trial. We prepare every case as if it will, which is often why it does not. When trial is necessary, we try cases in Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, and Sumner counties regularly.

Adoption

1 question

Uncontested stepparent adoptions often finalize in 90 to 120 days from filing. If the biological parent contests the termination of parental rights, the timeline extends significantly, typically 9 to 24 months. We will give you an honest assessment of what type of proceeding you are facing after reviewing the facts.

Support

1 question

Tennessee uses the Income Shares Model, which looks at both parents' adjusted gross incomes and applies a schedule based on the child's needs and the parenting time split. The calculation also accounts for health insurance premiums, extraordinary educational expenses, and parenting time above a certain threshold. We use the official state calculator and can show you different scenarios in the consultation.

Fee structure

Transparent pricing, no hidden retainers.

Every engagement starts with a clear fee agreement written in plain English. Below are our standard structures. Exact fees are confirmed after your consultation once we understand the full scope of your matter.

Initial consultation

$200

A full 60 minutes with Eleanor or Daniel. Credited to your engagement if you retain the firm. Paying for the consultation lets us prepare for your specific facts.

Uncontested divorce (flat fee)

From $1,800

Covers the drafting, filing, and finalization of an uncontested divorce with a marital dissolution agreement. Exact fee depends on whether minor children are involved and asset complexity.

Contested matters (hourly)

$395 to $450 / hour

Contested divorce, custody, and high-asset matters are billed hourly. Eleanor bills at $450/hour. Daniel bills at $395/hour. Paralegals bill at $145/hour. We provide budget estimates and update them proactively.

Mediation (as neutral)

$350 / hour

When one of our partners serves as a neutral mediator, the fee is typically split between the two parties. Most mediation days run 6 to 8 hours.

Adoption (flat fee)

From $3,500

Uncontested stepparent adoptions are handled for a flat fee. Contested termination matters are billed hourly due to unpredictable litigation scope.

Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements

From $1,500

Flat-fee drafting for straightforward prenups. More complex agreements involving business interests, multi-property portfolios, or blended families are quoted after the consultation.

All fees are confirmed in writing before engagement. Retainers are held in a separate trust account and billed against monthly with itemized statements.
