About the house

An 1864 townhouse, an innkeeper from Norway.

Henrik Lund bought the building in 2015, restored it over three years with architect Annabelle Selldorf's local office, and opened in spring 2018 with eighteen rooms, a small restaurant, and a private garden.

A short history

The building, the block, and the idea.

412 Warren Street was built in 1864 as a private residence for a Hudson whaling merchant, with later additions by his children and great-grandchildren that eventually turned the whole property into a small department store, a boarding house, and finally, by the 1980s, a vacant brick shell with a tree growing through the third floor.

Henrik Lund bought the building in 2015, after a decade running small hotels in Copenhagen and Reykjavik. He spent three years restoring the structure with a small team of local craftspeople, the original plaster moldings preserved wherever possible, the original 1864 timber beams left exposed in the top-floor rooms.

The Halden opened in spring 2018 with eighteen rooms, a small restaurant by chef Ana Beltran, and a private garden courtyard that has since become the hotel's quiet center. Henrik still lives upstairs in the staff apartment and greets most guests at the front desk on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
