FAQ
Straight answers, no jargon.
Emergency & Response
Do you really answer the phone at 2am?
Yes. A live Northstar dispatcher answers every call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will never reach voicemail or an answering service. For confirmed emergencies (no heat below 40 F, no cooling above 95 F), a tech is on the way within the hour.
How fast is your typical emergency response?
Our average emergency on-site time is 62 minutes across all service calls. For homes within 20 miles of our Reading Road shop, that number is often under 45 minutes. We track this internally and publish it publicly because we think you deserve to know.
What counts as a true HVAC emergency?
No heat when the forecast is below 40 F, no cooling when indoor temps exceed 90 F, natural gas smell near equipment, carbon monoxide detector alarms, and refrigerant leaks near living areas all qualify for immediate dispatch. Call us and describe what you are experiencing; our dispatcher will triage it honestly.
Pricing & Financing
Are estimates really free?
Free in-home estimates for any replacement, new install, or duct project. Diagnostics for active repair calls are a flat $79, waived if you book the repair with us. There are no hidden trip fees, fuel surcharges, or after-hours premiums for plan members.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We offer 0% interest for 12, 18, or 24 months on qualifying installs, plus longer-term low-rate options through our lending partners. We also identify every applicable utility rebate and federal tax credit at quote time and apply them directly to your invoice where possible.
Why does your price sometimes look higher than a competitor?
Usually because we include things others charge extra for: permit fees, proper refrigerant recovery and disposal, a Manual J load calculation, and a multi-year labor warranty. We are glad to do a line-by-line comparison with any other written quote you have received.
Installation & Equipment
How fast can you replace a dead system?
Most standard residential installs are scheduled within 48 hours. We stock the most common system sizes so we rarely wait on parts. If your old system completely fails, call us and we will prioritize your slot.
What brands do you install?
We install Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Bosch, and Goodman. At your free estimate, we will show you two or three options at different efficiency tiers with honest payback math so you can choose what is right for your budget and goals.
Do I need a permit for a new system?
In most Ohio and Kentucky jurisdictions, yes. We handle the permit application, schedule the inspection, and ensure the system passes before we consider the job finished. Permit costs are included in our quotes; there are no surprise add-ons at invoice.
What size system do I need?
The right size depends on your home's square footage, insulation levels, window area, and several other factors. We run a full Manual J heat-load calculation on every replacement quote. Trusting a contractor who sizes by square footage alone is one of the most expensive HVAC mistakes a homeowner can make.
Maintenance & Plans
How often should I service my HVAC system?
Twice a year is the manufacturer-recommended standard: once in spring before cooling season and once in fall before heating season. Skipping tune-ups voids many manufacturer warranties and shortens equipment life by an average of 30%.
Can I cancel my maintenance plan?
Yes, anytime with 30 days notice and no cancellation fee. We do not believe in trapping customers. That said, fewer than 3% of members cancel each year, which we think is a better argument for the plan than any discount we could offer.
What does the 21-point AC tune-up actually include?
Coil inspection and cleaning, refrigerant pressure check, capacitor and contactor testing, electrical connection inspection, blower motor check, condensate drain cleaning, thermostat calibration, safety switch testing, supply and return air temperature measurement, and a full system cycle test. You receive a written report every time.
Technicians & Trust
What if I am not home when you arrive?
We send a tech profile and photo via text 30 minutes before arrival. You can authorize work remotely, leave access instructions in advance, or reschedule with one tap. We never begin work without explicit authorization.
Are your technicians employees or subcontractors?
All of our technicians are W-2 employees. They carry company-issued ID, drive branded Northstar trucks, and have passed background checks and drug screening. We never use day-labor subcontractors on residential calls.
What certifications do your techs hold?
Every technician holds NATE certification (North American Technician Excellence), EPA 608 Universal refrigerant handling certification, and Ohio contractor licensing. Senior techs additionally hold BPI Building Analyst certification for whole-home energy assessments.
