Selected work

Six projects, briefly told.

We complete six to ten projects a year. Below is a selection from the last three years across residential, civic, and adaptive reuse work.

01 · Residential

North Shore Cabin

Lutsen, MN · 2024

2,840 sf

A blackened cedar cabin for a family of four, cantilevered above a granite outcrop on the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Sited to preserve a 180 year old white pine and to read as a single dark volume from the lake side. The interior reverses to white oak and lime plaster. Heated slab, ground-source heat pump, and a standing seam roof engineered for the snow load and the wind that comes off Superior.

02 · Civic

Powderhorn Public Library

Minneapolis, MN · 2023

18,400 sf

A neighborhood branch of the Hennepin County Library system, a full renovation and 4,200 sf addition to a 1948 Federal-style original.

We preserved the original reading room and limestone facade and added a glassed children's wing facing Powderhorn Park. The project was the first Hennepin County library to achieve LEED Gold, and it has had the highest weekly visitor count of any branch since reopening.

03 · Adaptive reuse

Mill District Loft Conversion

Minneapolis, MN · 2023

11,200 sf · 9 units

Adaptive reuse of a 1908 grain warehouse on Washington Avenue into nine timber-frame residential lofts.

We preserved the original heavy-timber columns, the rough brick, and the freight elevator (still operating). Nine units, all corner units, with windows on at least two sides. Mechanical and acoustic work was the hardest part; nobody photographs it but everyone notices.

04 · Residential

Lake Harriet Residence

Minneapolis, MN · 2022

4,650 sf

A whole-house renovation and 1,400 sf addition to a 1924 Dutch Colonial four blocks from Lake Harriet.

We left the front facade and the original oak millwork untouched, and rebuilt the back of the house as a long, low addition that opens onto the garden. New kitchen, two bedrooms, a screened porch, and a basement music room.

05 · Live-work

Saint Croix Workshop

Stillwater, MN · 2022

3,100 sf

A combined residence and woodworking shop on the bluffs above the Saint Croix River.

Concrete-walled shop on the lower level, residence in a board-formed concrete and cedar volume above. Designed so the client could move all the work in himself, with a 5,200 lb freight lift integrated into the entry stair.

06 · Adaptive reuse

Cathedral Hill Schoolhouse

Saint Paul, MN · 2021

14,800 sf

A historically sensitive adaptive reuse of an 1894 brick schoolhouse into a Montessori preschool and primary school.

The building had been vacant for 22 years. We restored the limestone foundation and original slate roof, opened the second-floor classrooms with a new bank of dormers, and added a fully accessible elevator without touching the historic facade.
